◆住吉台（すみよしだい）
犬山祭の車山は三層構造で大きいのが 特徴だが、その中でも最大規模を誇る のがこの住吉臺。高さは八・五二八メー トルもあり、横幅三・一メートル、梶 棒長さは六・一メートルとなっている。 一八二四年に大工吉右衛門・木挽三治、 彫物師公勝・漆屋和助・徳兵衛たちによ り現在の車山が建造された。車山名は、 能楽の「唐の白楽天と老漁夫の知恵問答」 を元にしたからくりからつけられた。
◆Sumiyoshidai Yama (Kumanocho Precinct)
The Inuyama festival yama are famous for their three deck structure. The Sumiyoshidai yama is the largest at 8.6m high, 3.1m wide, and is 6.1m long as measured by its steering beams. This yama was made in 1824 by many local craftsmen and carpenters. The yama takes the name of its karakuri display. It is based on a “Noh” play in which the Chinese god of poem, Hakurakuten, debates the Japanese god of poem, Sumiyoshi, who is disguised as an old sherman.

◆住吉・白楽天（すみよし・はくらくてん）
能楽の「住吉・白楽天」から物語をとったからくりに由来しているもので、「唐の白楽天と老漁夫の知恵問答」がくり広げられます。平安時代に、玄宗皇帝の使者として、唐の国から白楽天が民情視察のため、日本に渡って来ます。そして日本の海神である住吉明神と問答します。白楽天は中国にはすばらしい漢詩があると披露し、住吉は日本には和歌があると応じます。
白楽天は日本の文化の質の高さに驚き帰っていくという国滅発揚の内容です。興行からくりで有名な竹田座にも同じ演目がありました。犬山の町衆はそれをからくりの術比べに脚色しました。からくりでは白楽天はお社頭（しゃとう）に変身し、住吉は神橋（しんきょう）に変身します。どちらも見事な変わり身の早さが見所となっています。九代玉屋庄兵衛が新調復元。変身のからくり技術は、古来からの折り紙の技法を応用し、現代のコンパクトに縮める最新技術の源流とも言われています。
◆Sumiyoshi Hakurakuten (Japanese god of poetry Sumiyoshi & the Chinese god of poetry, Hakurakuten)
This float is named after the story of a Noh play involving the Chinese god of poetry, Hakurakuten, and the Japanese god of poetry Sumiyoshi.
In the late 8th century the Chinese god of poetry Hakurakuten visits Japan as an ambassador to conduct an inspection. Upon entering Japan he meets the Japanese god of poetry Sumiyoshi who is disguised as an old fisherman. Hakurakuten performed a famous Chinese poem for Sumiyoshi who in turn performed a famous Japanese poem. Hakurakuten was so impressed with the Japanese poem that he left Japan and returned to China.
In Inuyama’s karakuri version of the story both Sumiyoshi and Hakurakuten compete by transforming themselves using magic. It is amazing to see how quickly they change themselves. Hakurakuten changes into a shrine while Sumiyoshi changes into a bridge.
These karakuri were remade by the famous mechanic Tayama Shobei.
This type of transforming karakuri evolved from Japanese origami. In turn compact folding umbrellas evolved from transforming karakuri.
