新町の車山
◆浦嶌（うらしま）
犬山祭で唯一の船形車山である。他と 同様に三層の車山を有していた時期もあるが、一八七三年に名古屋から譲り受け て翌年修復したものが今も使われている 車山である。明治初期だけに、当時は「黒船」と呼ばれたという。一八八七年に、二層作りから三層作りに改造されて いる。下山は船腹であり、囃子方は他の車山と異なり中山に前方に乗る。船首に 鷁の首が刻まれていることやその外観から、「鶏車山」とも呼ばれている。
◆Urashima Yama (Shinmachi Precinct)
Only this yama takes the shape of a boat. In 1873 this yama was received from Nagoya City and restored. At that time the yama was called the Black Ship. During the restoration a third deck was added. Since the lower deck is inside the ship, the musicians ride on the front of the middle deck. On the bow is the bust of the mystical bird, Geki. So it is also called Tori Yama. “Tori” is the Japanese word for bird.

◆浦嶌（うらしま）
浦嶌は昔から語り継がれ、誰からも親しまれてきたお伽噺に由来しています。古くは、日本書紀では浦島が捕えた大亀が女人となり妻となる。二人は、海中に入り不老不死の理想郷である蓬莱山へ行く。その後、各地を遍歴して仙人達と会う物語が最初です。
道教の神仙思想が日本のお伽噺の低流になっています。浦島太郎が亀に乗って進んでいくと、行く手に大貝が現れ、２つに割れると中からまばゆいばかりの乙姫が出て、波間を渡り浦嶌に玉手箱を手渡し、また貝の中に姿を消します。玉手箱を開けると白煙が立ちのぼり、浦島太郎はたちまち白髪の翁になってしまう哀しい物語です。
糸のみで操作するからくり人形の最も難しく、また見せ場でもあるのは、乙姫は浦島太郎に玉手箱を渡すくだりです。２体とも玉手箱を止める金具など付いていないため、失敗のないように受け渡す操作がからくり方の最も緊張する時でもあります。また、玉手箱を開け白髪の翁の面かぶりの早わざも難しく、一瞬に翁となった浦島太郎が身を振り嘆く場面は折から囃子も衰調を帯びた調べに変わり、衰感を誘います。６代玉屋庄兵衛の作を９代玉屋庄兵衛が新調復元しました。
◆Urashima (The tale of Urashima Taro)
The famous story of Urashima Taro has been passed down through the generations. There are many versions with the first one written down in 720.
In one of the stories written in the Chronicles of Japan, a fisherman named Urashima catches a big turtle, which transforms into a woman whom he marries. They go into the sea together and travel to Mt. Horai which is a utopia of near immortality. They meet many immortal mountain wizards. The Urashima Taro story is based on the concept of Taoism.In the Inuyama karakuri version of the story Urashima Taro rides on the back of a big turtle and comes upon a big seashell. The shell splits and a beautiful princess appears. She walks along the top of the water towards Urashima Taro and gives him a present and then disappears. He opens the box and white smoke appears instantly transforming him into an old man with a white beard.
This is one of the most difficult karakuri to operate as the dolls are operated solely by strings and when the princess hands the box to Urashima Taro it is not connected to anything. The people operating the karakuri become very nervous at this point, as they cannot make even a single mistake.
The quick action needed when Urashima Taro puts on the facemask of the old man is also a very difficult procedure. After changing Urashima Taro shakes showing his sadness.
The 6th Tamaya Shobei made the original karakuri while his great grandson the 9th Tamaya Shobei remade the current version.
